I once sat down and thought about if someone were to ask me about what three or four values I would like to be known for having after I was gone. I thoughtfully pondered that and came up with these four values I want most.
- Humility
- Charity and Love
- Mercy and Compassion
- Integrity
I can’t say that I have achieved that goal yet. That is a lifelong pursuit. It is my driving force, my ultimate goal in life. As I work on those four things, I believe that the rest of everything meaningful that I want in life will fall into place.
“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”
So it is with anything good. If we want peace, we must practice peace. If I want humility, I must practice humility.
All these values are attributes of Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. I cannot obtain those values without the Grace of God. It is a diligent pursuit through prayer, obedience and faith in which I may achieve my goal. My goal isn’t that people would assume I am some sort of master of those things, no way; I cannot master those things anymore than I can be perfect. I merely wish to be able to say, of all my characteristics, those ones were what I was known best for. Will that be the case? I don’t know, probably not. But I’m going to try. I will go and do, and leave the rest to God.
